A tail from the desert..

„I have to stop here for five minutes, is ok for you?“ said Abrahim, my Egyptian taxi driver, while we were racing through the mountains in Sinai, Egypt.

„I have to make pray.“ He said when I just stared at him in my out-most confusion. „What do you have to do here?“ I asked him while looking at my surroundings, red mountains, sandy roads and a man, a few meters from the road, who seemed to me at my first glance to be just stumbling over there doing nothing in particular.
„I have to pray, you know Muslim-time, I will be just five minutes, you can go out the car if you like.“ He said and then parked the car on the side of the road next to the wanderer and jumped out. I stayed in the car and watched Amrahim approach this man and exchanging some words before the man handed him a bottle of water which he used to clean his feet and hands properly before embracing the earth with his hands. I snacked on his chips and realized that this was a very strange situation; I‘m on my way to Habiba farm near Nuwaibe north in the Sinai, my driver, is an Egyptian man wearing a white dress and a withe and red, long headpiece who's praying in the middle of nowhere and I´m eating chips, which I normally don´t even enjoy at all. But I figured it was a weird enough situation and I was quite hungry. „Salam aleikum,“ said Ambrahim when he returned to the car chewing leaf with a grin on his face. He offered me one and I reluctantly accepted it and quietly watched him stuff himself with more of those before I decided that if he‘s eating it, it must not be very poisonous. They tasted quite nice actually, kind of spicy but strangely nice.
„It‘s from his farm“ he said to me looking towards the stumbling man with the praying water. I look around  the fields of sand and rocky mountains, there didn't seem to be anything resembling a farm in any way. Then I noticed some wires in some very non-obvious way and I guess that´s where he grows his treasures leafs. Supposedly he has some aubergine and tomatoes as well, but I would never have guessed it in a million years when we drove away.
He brought me to Habiba Farm safe and sound right before sunset  where I met with the other volunteers where they were finishing their working day on their dirty feet with a wild tan on their faces.
So here I am. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere I guess, trying to settle in a place without a roof and look forward to farming tomorrow.

The adventure has begun

I sit with a smelly blanked in my borther's and his girlfriend's (Kristmann and Arena) chilly apartment. Granada in Spain does indeed get cold during the winter, although surely not as deadly cold as in Iceland. I came here to visit them and started my next long travel last Tuesday. This time I intend to practice diving and dive around Asia with my good friend Unnur who will be joining me in January. But for now I'm on my own once again and can already feel the thrilling sensation of being alive and free to go wherever I want. I've had a lovely time with Kristmann and Arena. We've walked the hills of Granada, eaten Tapas, talked for hours, watched Aladdin and so on. Tomorrow Arena and myself will be going to Morocco and we plan to be there for one week, staying in a guesthouse where we'll learn different kind of things from the locals.

The adventure has begun and I will share my experience with those who care to read this silly blog.

Enjoy!

I was thinking..

What am I doing? What is it that is going on when I'm thinking? If a thought is an idea or experience of the environment, when does it start? How does thinking begins? Some say, like a fellow philosopher, Donald Davidson, that animals do not think. But do they have feelings? Pets make a gloomy sound when a loved one leaves. As must all mammals grow some form of affection for their infants as to have the need to take care of them. That, I would say, involves feelings. So then what is our advantage? What is it that separates us, humans, from other animals? We have the privilege of communicating our expressed feelings through language and therefor identify them with each other. With language we form and develop them through generations and time. But was our primary thinking just waves of stormy feelings flowing through our minds unable to escape to a "civilized" understanding? Do animals think with their heart like we all desperately wish to have the courage to do? I was just thinking..

Falling in love with my own emotions

I just arrived from a two weeks trip with my sister in Holland and Belgium and I haven´t slept for 31 hour. I feel tired and I feel sad. I feel happy and I feel glad. Everything at the same time. In a way this trip seems like a typical holiday to enjoy ones time off and meet old friends but in a way this was so much more for me. I feel like I´ve grown. Emotionally. In every possible way. I learned that feelings are so importand in life and they are what makes this all worth while. Being able to love and care about people, places and moments. Getting a physical closeness from a man without it having to be sexual. Only giving energy to each other is something that intrigues me in a whole other level. I´m starting to sense and understand in a new way. An interesting way. I love how life keeps surprising you, you evolve with it in its constant change of blow.

I´m in love with life and my emotions.

done.

I´ve suddenly finsished one year at the university which I started out of more spontaneity than anything in my intire life. It feels good. After hard work I can do anything, nothing is expected of me. To celebrate the end of my exams, I didn´t get hammered, I played monopoly and cleaned my room. O my has that room not been cleaned for an embarrasingly long time.
Now I will devote my time to reading, writing, painting, working (on the side) and best of all; traveling. I will be going somewhere this summer, a part from enjoying the Icelandic summer I will travel abroad, of course, how could I not?

Relief. Enjoy. Live.

dreams slide into your everyday life

After going ridiculously late to sleep because of a silly movie and then an awful sleep where I was constantly waking up, I came back to reality on the wrong side. The last bit of my dream I remember before I was woken up, everything was falling apart. I couldn´t do anything right and I took to grumpiness with my from the sleepworld into the concious one. I started focusing only on the bad things that normally are so small that if I had woken up on the right side of myself I wouldn´t even notice them. I really do not know why I´m writing this. Possibly to get rid off my annoyance towards life and this gray, cold, depressing, autumn morning.
Just the fact that I had the idea, and for a glimpse of a second, I wondered if I should go back to sleep, skip school and not go to work. Lie in my bed under the sheets all day and escape reality. Go back to the land of sleeping and see if things aren´t a bit more simple.
Well yes. Just that fact says alot. Since I´m not the type of person to wallow in selfpity about nothing. So before it hits noon, I´m going to move to the other side of myself. The right side. Or the left one, depends how you want to look at it. I will keep studying, do my best, go to class and work tonight!
Life isn´t so bad. It´s actually awesome. Just depends on which side you´re going to pick. I pick the joyfull one.

Surviving on the iceberg

Coming back to Iceland felt like my head was put into a bucket of icecold water. Sraight from bar-working, late nights and smoking like a chimny into a healthy, homey, hardworking, schoolgirl that always goes to sleep before midnight. My body had to severely recover from this sudden change of lifestyle. Now after almost two weeks I'm finally catching my breath. It feels good to be back at school. My brain and mind is more alert.

Although I do not know how long I will last on this lovely iceberg. I've already found myself looking through some exchange booklets at the university.

But for now this is it. Goddamn those icelandic hills. Biking here is ten times more hard work than in sweet flat Holland.

Back in Europe.

I know. I am absoloutly the world's worst blogger. But what can I do? The computer and cyber world is not really getting too much of my attention when there's so much to see in a place like South-America. But I'm back now. Back in Amsterdam. I decided to delay my university studies again and follow my heart. So here I am, broke, homeless and unemployd. And the party starts.
But I will reviel a little bit in bigger pieces about the journy in general, because this was one hell of a trip.
Last time I wrote, I was in Rio de Janeiro. So. Like I said a fantastic place, very beautiful and with a lot to offer. We lived like queens in this big appartement, went around like proper tourists and had no problems what so ever. After Rio we went to Sao Paulo. Totally the opposite of Rio. Too big. The city is like a dragon. Getting from onw place to the other takes ages and nothing really cought my attention too much. Although I think that if you have time, money and knowlage of where to go and when. You could probably enjoy staying there. The gap between rich and poor is too big. If you we'd want to eat a proper food and not worry about food poisoning, we'd gone broke after two days. And if you want to go out and feel relatively safe, you'd be broke after the night. So after a few days we decided to head straight out to Buenos Aires. After endless search for a good way to go there we figured we'd take the bus. 36 hours and voila! This vity is really fucking charming. I rally enjoyd it's culture, tango class, lecker stake and delicious red wine. Although there was one black spot in that perfect picture. Our second last day after a lovely stroll in the historic area, La Boca, taking beautiful pictures in the romantic cold. We were walking towards the metro in a not so crowded street, yes I know very stupid. We were followd by two guys who stole my camera and beat Luis in the head so he ended on the ground. We reported it to the police but I don't think they really give a shit about one tourist's camera. The report probably ended in the garbage that same night. But we survived and we were lucky we didn't get hurt. Then after Buenos Aires we visited Rosario. Cute town but very very dead at this time of year. And after we went to Mendoza. Where we stayed in a hostel with free wine. Of course like the owner sayed, very chubby and funny guy, "the first night you go crazy and drink too much and after you don't even want to hear about it" I guess he was right in a way. Mendoza is beautiful and extreamely cold at this time of year. It has a lot of winter sports and activities available but we ended up in the mountains enjoying the natural hot water spa.
From Mendoza we took the bus over the mountains and walked in snow in beginning of july to go to Santago, Chile. We didn't stay there very long, which is a shame because it is a very interesting and beautiful city. Chile has what I've seen the most brilliant sunsets. There we celibrated Luis's birthday with a bottle of champagne and a jacuzzi. Getting tired of the cold we went up north again and celebrated my birthday in a smaller town by the beach, Vina del Mar. Also a very pleasent day. Then we went to La Serena where the frickin' cold greeted us early in the morning. From there we took a small trio to the mountains to this astronomigcal point with a guide and a peak in a telescope to see the stars. Amazing.
After La Serena we wanted to go to one beautiful beach but went too far with the bus so we ended up in a relatively interesting city, Antofagasta. Probably more alive in the summer. Still too cold. So we ran straight to Arica, the northest city in Chile where the warmth finally greeted us. We spent there 3 days. Very charming town.
Then, next destination. Peru. Of course the most memorable saight in Peru is Machu piccu. One of the world's wonders. A bit hard to get there, a bus after a taxi, then a train and finally 6 km walk up the ridicoulusly steep stairs up to the wonder. after one hour of walking and sweating we forgot every thing because it was really like a dream place. So beautiful.
Of course we also visited Lima for a few days and then Troijllho, a very small and boring town with more taxi's than habitants. TAXI TAXI! We were just about to go insane. Also people selling on the street are very agressive. But it's funny to see. I loved to see, more in the countryside, all the women wearing the traditional outfit. They were all the same. Amazing.
When we were done with Peru our time was getting very short. But I was determined to go and see my friend Paola in Colombia. So again in the bus, but this time, we stayed more or less in a bus for 4 days. I have never ever slept so good like in Paola's place when we arrived. And I don't have mention the shower. I felt like I was in heaven.
The days in Bucaramanga, Colombia was definatily one of the high points in the journy. Her family and friends are too welcoming and generous. Their sence of humour is tremendous and they are always in good spirit. The food there is delicious and you can for sure not blame these people for eating alot, it's just too good. I think if I had satyed there longer I would have rolled out of the country. We had good times, paragliding and seeing the amazing canion not far from the city but also worse times as well when we had a car crash on our back. Nobody got hurt but the car was smashed. No way trying to drive that thing afterwards. Our stay in colombia was definatly colorful and when we were leaving to Bogota to catch our flight back to Fortaleza, Paola's mother made everybody almost pee their pants when she stuffed hour bags with cerial boxes and whisky bottles among other things. Like she said, we had a long trip ahead of us and we needed to be prepared. At first we thought she was joking, then realised, she was dead serious. One of the funnier women I've ever met. We did accept some oranges though and cookies and went our way after thanking tham for their hospitality.
And then back to Fortaleza after many hours of flying and changing planes, no straight fly. We took then a bus to the wonderful beach Jericoacoar. There is literally a town ON the beach. Just sandals or nothing. No high heals or any kind of that bullshit. Bikini and kanga. There we drank overloads of caipirinhas and relaxed perfectly before entering again the real world.

So that was that. I really saw and learned alot from this trip.

I want to go back.

There's always another time. Now is time to work. A different kind of adventure.

America du Sul. Obrigado. Gracias.

Rio de janeiro

Your lovely traveler is now in Rio de Janeiro. I enjoyed Salvador alot. That city is without a doubt the most beautiful of all the bigger cities I´ve seen in Brazil. We stayed in in this silly little hotel just by the beach which was strangely cheaper than all the hostels over there. We celebrated this annual fiesta Sao Joao or something in that area. Live music caipirinhas and cakes on the street and loads of people having a good time the whole weekend. The only thing that was off about this wonderful place was the pushy people on the street. It´s like the people get more agressive the souther you go in Brazil. People literally follow you to wait for you to give them some money.
After Salvador we flyed to Rio de Janeiro. Our flight was at 4:20 in the morning so that night we hardly got any sleep. We arrived in a domestic airport so of course there was no tourist info in sight. So we decided to take the bus to Cobacobana, the most well known beach in the city, and start walking around to find a hostel. Everything was rediculously expensive and we ended up walking for about 3 hours looking for something with all our stuff on the back and resless from a sleepless night. Luckely we ran into one woman who was renting an appartment to tourists for a cheaper price than a room in a hostel. Of course we took the offer and are now staying in a very cozy place just by Ipanema beach. Rio is very beautiful and really too many things to see.

So this is it for now. The city is waiting for me.

On the road

The adventure has started and there is no day I can possibly say that is boring. After staying in Fortaleza for one week, we finally hit the road into the south. Second place we visited was the amazing paradise beach town, Canoa Quebrada. There we stayed in a very charming hostel which was ownd by a dutch guy. The only thing I can say about this place is that when I was there I had the feeling like everything was perfect. I didn´t need anything more. The grass was greenest on my side. After a few days of heaven we went to Natal, a big city just like Fortaleza. We stayed there only a couple of days, checked out the city, drink some cocktail from a pineapple and then hit the road again. Then we went to Pipa, also a very cute beachtown but slightly bigger and more touristic than Canoa Quebrada. It started out very good, we found a very homey hostel which was ownd by one woman. There we could use the kitchen and of course we took the opperatunity and made a dinner. But.. after the meal I started to be a little bit tired, also Luis so we took a siesta. That siesta lasted me almost 48 hourse with a break of going to the toilet and eating a few peices of fruit. The meat we had gotten that night we made the dinner was supposed to be something else than pork, but apparently it was. So I got fucking food poisoning and had to stay in bed almost the whole time I was there. After that wicked adventure we left again to Joa pessoa. W stayed there one night and went then to Jacuma, to get to Tambaba, a nude beach, which was suggested to us by a friend of the woman in the hostel in Pipa (total lunatic). On the way we met a woman who hooked us up with one room in Jacuma. We are now still here and I´m desperate to leave this room after my big war against the musquietos. The first night they attacked and I was vulnarable. I decided than I would not give in so easy so the next night I taped a t-shirt to cover one whole that lead outside, I oversprayed myself before sleep with a repellent and even slept in a sleeping bag the whole night so they couldn´t get me. I woke up today almost cooked alive I was so warm, but only one bite! I won!
And now we are going to leave this very strange town and heading to Salvador.

First days in Fortaleza

I´m sitting in a small internet café near my hostel waiting until the rain stops. Of course I forgot to bring the unbrella like an idiot since it has been mostly raining since I came here. There have been some sunny moments however and sunday was absolutely wonderful. I went to this very nice beach with the woman who owns the hostel I´m staying at with her friend with her baby and brother. Drinking beer, eating crabs and drinking coconut water was amazing. I swam in the warm sea and had a fantastic time. On saturday I went out with the woman, her name is Caritas, and her friend. I tasted a rather funky drink, beer and red wine mixed together and then loads of caipirinhas which were to my surprise cheaper than beer. We went to this one night club where I met another friend of hers who is an english techer in a University and asked me to come to his class on tuesday and talk to the students. So yesterday he picked me up and I went with him to class and was a "teacher" for one hour. It was totally awesome. The guy said I am a natural born teacher haha. In between all this I´ve been walking around trying to get by with my limited portugese and everything takes 10 times longer when you cannot talk with the people. For exaple, trying to get a simple phone card to call europe took me 3 days until finally I ran into this friendly guy in the supermarket who luckily for me had lived in New Zealand for a while and he took me all over the place to get me this silly car which worked out in the end and I could finally call Luis. He is coming tonight and I can´t wait!
It has really been so fun to be here and most of the people I meet are very kind and friendly, offering me things and asking nothing in return. But I suppose it´s not going to be the same everywhere. This is a big country andFortaleza is actually small city compared to other ones, even though it has around 2,5 million inhabitants.
This has been a great start and I have all the rest of the continent to explore!

Finally there - BRAZIL

Well well, lovely people. I´m here at last in S-America. I arrived to Fortaleza last night, without any clue what to expect. And to make it a little bit more exciting I didn´t book a place to sleep and didn´t have any info on the city since I had to leave my lovely south america guide book in Germany when I had my flight to Portugal. It was too heavy to take with me. So I landed and was a bit freaked out to see all those people with medical masks and big posters about the pig flu. But understandable that they do it on the airport, because I haven´t seen anybody wearing that in the city. So I got through and found this tourist info spot and tried to ask for a hostel. The woman didn´t speak a word of english of course so I tried my limited portugese which I had gotten from staying in Portugal for almost 3 weeks. The woman wasn´t very helpful but this random guy who supposedly works in the airport booked a place for me and showed me the taxi. I arrived at the hotel and was totally dead. Today it has been raining like crazy and I´ve been around a bit getting soaking wet. I checked out another hostel that belongs to a woman I found on Couchsurfing and she invited me to lunch and to meet her friends. So later I will meet up with them but in the mean time I´ll recover from my icecold shower, yeah yeah welcome to Brazil.

I have to say, although I only intended to stay in portugal for a few days and ended up staying there for almost 3 weeks I most certanly do not regret it. I had a great time and had the chance to learn a bit of portugese, I swear my portugese is probably better than my dutch. But Luis is still finishing some stuff over there and he will join me next week.

So this is the start and I will tell you all about my ways around this continent.
